Zakat (pronounced za-kart) is an Arabic term given to a form of almsgiving amongst Muslims around the world. Translating as ‘that which purifies’, is an Islamic religious observation and one of the ‘Five Pillars of Islam’, ranked in terms of importance amongst Muslims after ‘Prayer.’
As a pillar of Islam, Zakat is a mandatory charitable obligation to Muslims. 2.5% (or 1/40) of an individual’s accumulated wealth and savings must be collected and distributed amongst the lesser privileged and the poor. Whilst the collection and distribution of Zakat is often managed by the state in Muslim nations such as Saudi Arabia, Pakistan and Malaysia, it falls upon state approved institutions as Ceylon Baithulmal Fund to champion this noble cause in Sri Lanka, which it has performed consistently and effectively since 1957.
Ceylon Baithulmal Fund operates on some fundamental principles that define its ethical and operational standards:
Rehabilitation of Tsunami affected victims with both emergency and long term relief
Release of CBF 50th Anniversary Stamp and First Day cover. Public session with guest speakers from UK & South Africa in addition to local Muslim Luminaries
A pioneering effort to reach out to the poor and needy in areas out of Colombo. First Village Beneficiary a hamlet in the outskirts of Kinniya named Poovarasantheevu in the Trincomalee District. Amount Expended Rs 3.1m as follows:
Viilage Programme coupled with the first Deep well project in Welpothuwewa located in the Kurunegala District at a cost of Rs 1.4m
Contributions exceed Rs 50m with consequential expansion of regular activities. Launched livelihood programse involving Cattle Farming in North Central & Eastern Provinces.
Covid lockdown and Emergency Funds relief launched
Expansion of deep well projects with 18 wells drilled during 2024 Commencement of Community Centers/Prayer Rooms concept in remote areas with Sadaqa Funds received for 10 centers for a total value of 33m
